FASA Monthly Meeting Minutes

San Antonio Garden Center
Meeting was called to order at 9:58AM by Sandra Bloom at the San Antonio Garden Center, New Braunfels and Funston, San Antonio, Texas.
Three lost and found items were displayed; one had been left at the Nozome workshop and two at the Fashion Show. None of the items were claimed. If you lost something while at either of these events, see Sandra Bloom.
Three guests were introduced; Christa Martin, Mary Ann Kocusek and Denisha Tuthill. Both Mary Ann and Denisha had moved from San Antonio and are now back with us.
Business Meeting Reports
Approval Meeting Minutes – Approval of meeting minutes -The first order of business was to approve minutes of the last meeting as published in the Newsletter. No corrections were put forth and approval of the minutes passed unanimously.
Treasurer – Joan Termini, Treasurer, was not present but an email report was submitted showing as September 22, 2015 we had $13,871.81 in checking; $2,862.39 in money market funds, $14,554.02 in savings, and, as of August 25, 2015, a total of $35,144.51 in CDs.
Programs – Susie Monday provided the following list of programs through next June.
November – Cobwebb Sale As of the October meeting there were only a few tables left to rent for the sale. There will also be a FASA donation table available if you want to donate items. The money from the sale of these items will go directly to FASA
December – Holiday luncheon. Volunteers are needed for coordinating food, décor, table set up, and clean up. See Susie if you can fill any of these positions.
January –We will have a Runway Show preview and table decoration workshop.
February – Elizabeth Carrington – local artist/graphic designer
March – Program is tentative at the moment. We will have Mary Ruth Smith if we can coordinate her dates or Deborah Boschert from Lewisville, Texas if Mary Ruth’s dates don’t fit the schedule. Deborah is proficient in art quilts and fiber collage.
April Lyn Belisle will talk about having a studio gallery and an Etsy Shop for selling art.
May – Installation of officers and spring luncheon. Volunteers needed to coordinate food set up, décor, and cleanup.
June – Possibly Susan Shie, nationally and international award winning quilt artist.
Annual Show – The call for entry into the show closed October 15, 2015. As of the October general FASA meeting, we had twenty artists entered. Entries went to Mary Heathcott on October 16. Artists who have been juried into the show will receive notification between November 2 and November 6, 2015. FASA will be hanging the show on Sunday, November 15. Mary Ann Johnson will help check in and collect the juried artwork at our November 9th meeting. Artists that cannot deliver their artwork to the meeting can make arrangements with Jean Dahlgren for an alternate time and place.
The show will be held at the Plaza Club, Frost Bank Towers, 21st floor. The formal opening is November 16 with a reception on that evening from 5pm to 8pm. Charles LeBlanc is looking for cashiers and writers for taking the money during the show sales. If you have a tablet or smart phone, he will train you for the show.
Runway Show – Sandy Edsall reported that the committee is meeting with the Oak Hills Country Club on October 21st. They have several raffle items lined up. Show invitation if ready with pictures of raffle items. Georgia Zwartjes said they would be putting examples of things you could make for Bazaar Bazaar in the Newsletter. A challenge for the show is creating something wearable from your piece of Nozome fabric. Sandy also reported that Jennifer Martin is a new chairperson on the committee.
Center for Refugee Services – Diane Kellerman is actively working at the Center for Refugee Services. These people are legal refugees from Nepal, Burma, the Sudan, and the Congo who are trying to make a new life in the United States. The Center teaches them English, helps them get jobs, and has an active maternity program. The refugees try to help with their expenses by making and selling handmade items. FASA is providing them a table to show and sell their pieces at the Runway Show.
Newsletter/Website – Shirley Bugosh indicated there was nothing new to report this month. She said our website opening rate is 62.8% which is considered quite good. All articles for the Newsletter were sent to her on time this month. The top read article was Doerte Weber’s. Shirley told us that if we belong to other organizations put an article about FASA in their monthly Newsletter.
Membership – Sue Corbett reported that we now have 138 dues paying members and two more were added at today’s meeting.
Publicity – Jennifer Martin in now on the publicity team. She is prepared to write an article for the Rivard Report (local on-line publication that keeps up with current art community) concerning our annual show at the Plaza Club.
Education – Jean Peffers reminded us we are members of the Garden Center. Their program next month (November 4th, 9:30am) will be given by the president of the herb society and will be discussing using fresh herbs in your holiday cooking.
Community Service – Peggy Forester said we still support the Alamo Heights Christian Church’s food bank. Bring non-perishable food items or you can donate money. The church has thanked us for bringing needed items. Peggy also reminded us to report our volunteer hours for our IRS standing.
Sputnik Program – The group is changing their meeting time from 4 to 6PM to 2 to 4pm. They meet on the Sunday before our general monthly meeting, however, they will have no meeting in December.
Old Business
Kathy Furukawa Sale – Phyllis Jordan welcomed the generosity of Kathy’s husband, Paul. He donated all of her supplies in many different crafts. Paul has said that anything we sell, FASA can keep the money. A committee has been sorting all the items and pricing them for the last ten weeks. They have rented a 900 square foot storage unit and arranged a sale at the Carousel Courtyard, 1832 Nacogdoches (corner of Nacogdoches and New Braunfels) on November 12, 13, 14 and 15. They need members to volunteer for a three hour shift for sales clerks and cashiers. Sandra Bloom has seen the supplies and said they are top quality materials.
New Business – Next year we will have a holiday sale, Sunday, October 2, 2016 Sue Corbett and Sandy Schoenfeld are working on this project.
Announcements –
Uptown Art Stroll – formerly the Annual Art Walk, will be held at Olmos Park Terrace on November 7 and 8. Several of our members are participating.
Houston Quilt Festival – Susie Monday is teaching several classes at the Houston Quilt Festival. As of the October general meeting it was not too late to enroll in one of her classes.
Lyn Belisle Workshop – Lyn is having a workshop at Round Rock on October 31 and November 1, 2015.
Coffee at the meeting – Charlie LeBlanc will be in charge of bringing coffee for our meetings. If anyone wants to add some munchies, bring them on. They will be appreciated.
