SPUTNIK Meeting Minutes
April meeting will be Sunday, 2 April (to deconflict from Palm Sunday) at 2pmat Jean Dahlgren’s studio at 240 East Huisache, SATX 78212.
Journal prompt for this month is “origami/folding/textile manipulation.” If you missed last month and want to catch up, it was “Mandela.”
The 12 March 2017 FASA Spirited, Passionate, Uninhibited, Thoughtful, Nurturing, Innovative, Kind (SPUTNIK) meeting adjourned at 2 pm, with a vibrant group of artists in attendance. One beautifully hearted artist brought chocolate.
Calls for Entry:
- The Artist Circle presents “Threads of Resistance,” a juried exhibition of work created to protest the new administration’s actions and policies. We invite you to consider the theme “Threads of Resistance,” and create work – fiber art, art quilts, modern quilts or traditional quilts – to convey your passion, anger, or sadness about an issue that concerns you. Your work can be either positive (encouraging and unifying), or negative (portraying anger, sadness or discouragement). The entry fee is $30 for up to 3 pieces. Submissions must be a minimum of 20” wide x 20” high, and a maximum of 48” wide x 60” high.

Outdoor vending: Reservations are required, but there is no charge for selling outdoors in March and April! In May there is a $25 fee for our special Mother’s Day Market. Yes, this is Mother’s Day weekend, and more than 800 guests are expected in the Gazebo Restaurant! Last year our vendors sold like crazy during the day and celebrated in the evening.
Outdoor vendors are responsible for securing inventory on Saturday nights or setting up each morning. Tents can remain in place overnight. Bring your own tables, tents, and awnings.
Six spaces are available in the air-conditioned, newly remodeled Annex at $25 each. Reserve your space ASAP! Electricity is available, and there is no need to break down your booth on Saturday night. (20% discount for Annex spaces, when paid in advance for all three spring Markets).
Four premium spaces are available in the Estate Sale Gallery at $50 each. These are best for fine jewelry or other delicate items. You provide tables and secure cases, if needed. Electricity, security alarm, and cameras. (20% discount for Gallery spaces, when paid in advance for all three spring Markets).
Tables are available for $10 each per event, but you must reserve in advance. (72″ x 30″). Two chairs per vendor supplied at no charge!

- An artist attended specifically to invite us to show/sell at the Wine to Coffee Art Walk held every third Saturday 4-9 pm at 14743 Old Bandera Rd Helotes, TX 78023. She said there is a good amount of folks attending and they need more quality sellers. To become a vendor go to www.keepingtheculturealive.
com and click the Texas button. - The Pink Elephant in Startzville at 7768 FM-2673 Canyon Lake, Texas has both a thrift/antique store and a consignment area. An artist mentioned the booth leasing arrangements are easy, inexpensive, and simple if you are interested in selling from this location.

Discussion:
- We discussed the calendar and moved meeting dates for both April and May. May’s meeting will be 7 May to deconflict from Mother’s Day. The Fashion Show Chair attended the meeting to personally present Fashion Show information and offer tickets. She was well received and the group appreciated her extra efforts at outreach.
- As part of show and tell, those folks participating in the art journal projectdisplayed their interpretations. There was an amazingly wide and wonderful cornucopia of work. Some folks used collage, some drew, some drew about 15 different mandalas of varying sizes, some used stamps or stencils, some did embroidery work, some sewed dyed dryer sheets and painted doilies, some used preprinted mandalas and focused on coloring in to please themselves. All reported it was a great exercise and allowed folks to get into that peaceful, artistic, creative space. The artist who used a preprinted mandalas tried drawing her own but didn’t find the peace she was looking for and when she moved to coloring in the preprinted mandala, found the art and the peace flowing through her. We discussed the point of finding what works for the individual versus a lack of enjoyment when doing what you are “supposed” to do. The group is looking forward to working with the next topic of “origami/folding/textile manipulation.”
- Jean shared that the Oct 2017 Annual Show has a venue at University of Incarnate Word in the Semmes Gallery. She said the Storylines member installation is planning to be included as well. So, start your Storylines!
- An artist displayed her work with manipulating images using the Megaphoto app and the IMAEngine app. She said Susie Monday teaches these apps in her iPad classes.
- An artist brought in small amulet bags she had woven using cardboard as the weaving tool and fiber found already in her stash. She was encouraged to give a demonstration later in the year.
- Several artists displayed items they had made in support of their artistic resolutions and all were supportive of their ability to set a goal and achieve it. One artist displayed a bag produced for a magazine call for entry. She made it, photographed it and submitted it. Although it wasn’t accepted, she (and the group) enjoyed the bag and she was excited to have completed and submitted it on time.
Presentation:
March’s presentation was Prayer Flags. Victoria presented her samples of prayer flags, passed out a handout with several articles discussing the meaning and making of prayer flags, and discussed her journey making her prayer flags. She worked to make her flags out of things that would disintegrate into the wind without harming nature. She said she really enjoyed making the flags finding it peaceful and meditative. She tried to put good thoughts into her flags to send them out into the world.

Prayer Flags presentation and creation. Blanks will be available, please bring whatever you want to use to add to your flag: markers, paint, beads, buttons, other pieces of fabric, etc.
