Throughout 2015 Nicola is facilitating a series of felting and eco- printing workshops in North America, Europe and Australia, and we are lucky enough to get her teach here in Austin, through Austin Fiber Artists. During the first workshop we will learn how to combine silk, wool and embellishing fibers to create a beautiful nuno felt wrap or scarf, and in the second workshop we will discover how to create three-dimensional vessels or coin purses using the resist method of felting.
Nicola is a member of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland, FORM Designmade in Ireland, Feltmakers Ireland and Grima, she is currently joint custodian of international group FeltUnited with US felter Dawn Edwards. Her work is inspired by shapes from the natural world and from the beauty of the rural Irish landscape. During the nuno wrap workshop Nicola will share with participants the tumble dryer method of wet felting, a stress free way of coercing wool and embellishing fibers into silk to create a rich and colorful piece of wearable art. Because there is almost no rolling or rubbing involved, participants are free to enjoy the creative process. It is also ideal for those find regular felting methods too tiring!
In the vessel class, Nicola will share with participants the skills needed to design and felt a simple vessel or coin purse using the resist method of three-dimensional felting. Old pieces of silk and lace as well as treasured bits and bobs are often suitable to be incorporated into the felt. Should they wish, participants are encouraged to bring a selection of their favorite stash items and Nicola will help them design one off pieces, using these as a starting point.
