Mary Frances began sewing and crocheting at the age of five. Simultaneously building doll houses in the corner of a cabinet makers workshop. These early “threads” shaped her artistic sensibilities and creative journey. She will be sharing her story and the lessons learned that have allowed her to become the fulltime working artist she is today.
Bio
Mary Frances is a conceptual artist living and working in San Antonio Texas. She uses non-traditional materials including, beeswax, resins, silicone, roofing tar, textiles and natural fibers alongside oils, acrylics, photography, drawing materials and include both abstract and representational depictions. Her influences include KiKi Smith, Agnes Deane and Georgia O’Keeffe.
Our human connections and dependency on our earth. Her interest in the physical world is often used as a vehicle to explore socio-economic concerns including, domestic violence, human rights, political divisions, feminism and environmental conservation. Series and exhibitions include; Ashes to Ashes, Broken Beauty, of the soil, Flight Lines, Broken, Critical Mass, Journeys, and Edge of Reason.
In 2013, Mary Frances starting teaching with the University of Arkansas Fort Smith (UAFS). She soon added community classes and demonstrations through local arts programs. Teaching foundations and Advanced drawing classes renewed her love of teaching and confirmed a passion for encouraging creative explorations as fundamental to human development and critical thinking skills.
