Miki Rodriguez will present her journey as a fiber artist and illuminate the passion for creating.
Miki Rodriguez was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. She began her education
in drawing and painting at the University of Houston where she received her Bachelor of
Fine Arts. She went on to receive a fellowship and entered Maryland Institute College of
Art in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated in 2001 with an MFA.
She has taught art for over 30 years at all levels and is presently living in San
Antonio, Texas where she now has evolved into a full time professional exhibiting artist,
speaker and workshop instructor. Her media includes a variety and mixture of
spontaneous materials with an emphasis on fiber.
Exhibitions include the Fantastic Fibers at the Yeiser Center in Paducah,
Kentucky where Rodriguez received a first place recognition. Her work was also shown
at the Tubac Center in Tubac, Arizona and Houston Quilt Show and its extension in
Portland, Oregon. The work has been displayed at several FASA Member Exhibitions
where she also gained a First Place in 2015 and at the 2015 Southwest School of Arts
All Member Show where she received Best in Fibers Award.
She has had work published in Fiber Art Now and was invited to lecture, exhibit,
and teach a workshop at College of the Ozarks in Missouri.
Miki experiences working in the studio as a risky yet exhilarating passage. She
shares her personal and ever-changing journey as she explores design along the way.
You are invited to travel with her while she investigates new information in her
environment and experiences.
Changes in life cause changes in the studio. From materials and tools to
influences and inspirations, see how all things come together and affect each other
during the process of making art.
Inspiration, Impulse, Fiber – The materials of Miki’s works include traditional and non-traditional components, like cotton, silk, milgritos (Mexican charms), plastic and paper towels. Additionally, she considers common and uncommon techniques such as free motion stitching, embroidery, drilling and knotting.
“A cultural symbol and the intensity of heat in South Texas are a part of my borderland experience. I was born and raised in Laredo, Texas and although I live in San Antonio now, Laredo and my culture are still integral slices of my work. As I process my past and present experiences with materials in my studio, I am able to “see” my identity as a Hispanic woman and still tell my visual story of life today.”
