A SIMPLE PORTRAIT QUILT
About the presenters:
Cynthia R. Vaughn, M.Ed.

I was born in Aurora, Colorado but, grew up in San Antonio, Tx. I learned to sew sitting on the floor next to my mom while she was sewing. My Barbie dolls were the best dressed in the neighborhood. I grew into using Mom’s machine. I took Home Economics in Junior High and High school where I learned the rules to making clothing.
While living in Tacoma, Washington I began my self-taught journey into quilting. During that time and for many years to follow, I would see a quilt in a book or magazine and closely duplicate the design. I made traditional quilts. I was introduced to art quilts when I visited an exhibit of quilts by Faith Ringgold in 1991. My quilting progress and projects stalled for many years, while I worked full time and studied to obtain my degrees’ in Education.
Today, I design quilts and make both art and traditional quilts. I prefer art quilts because they have no rules and allow me to express myself. I am the co-creator of the first ever African American Sampler Quilt on Facebook.

Deb Harris is current President of the Fiber Artists of San Antonio. She was an organizer of “Telling Our Story: African American Influences on San Antonio’s History” at the Carver Cultural Center in 2018. The exhibit featured a collection of 21 Narrative Quilts illustrating significant time periods, people, organizations and events which have impacted San Antonio’s Black Community over the past 300 years. Each quilt was custom designed and researched by quilters of the African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio. The goal was to share the untold or forgotten history of individuals whose shoulders we stand upon today.

A SIMPLE PORTRAIT QUILT Make & Take
Greetings to you all! Here’s another opportunity to socialize, to bond, to learn something new, to create new art or to work on your UFOs following our July 8th General Meeting.
Our next Make and Take, following FASA’s General Meeting, is a Simple Portrait Quilt lead by Cynthia Vaughn and Deb Harris. During this Make and Take you will learn how to make a portrait quilt using a favorite photo.

Cynthia and Deb will provide most of the supplies you will need and a photo at a cost of $35 (cash only please). The only thing you need to bring is a pair of small sharp fabric scissors and your lunch should you get hungry.
The Make and Take will start at 12:30 and run until 3:30 at the Botanical Gardens.
Remember Make and Takes are free (aside from the supplies payable directly to the instructor) and open to everyone regardless of your membership with FASA.
Hope to see you at the July 8th Make and Take.
