The 7 May 2017
FASA Spirited, Passionate, Uninhibited, Thoughtful, Nurturing, Innovative, Kind (SPUTNIK) meeting adjourned at 2 pm, with a vibrant group of artists in attendance. Everyone was excited about their artistic creations for the month and eager to share with the group.
Journal prompt for this month is “Home.” It can be literal, abstract, whatever. Have fun with it! If you want to catch up, the prompts have been mandala; origami/folding/textile manipulation; self-portrait.
Start your Storylines! We will have the member’s installation again this year in the fall. 4-6” wide and 6-8 ft long. We had a great show last year, let’s do it again! Deliver your storylines on 8 Oct to SPUTNIK; 9 Oct to FASA; or straight to the Incarnate Word Semmes Hall on 10 Oct. I’m still nailing down people who will take the storylines from you, but the dates are final.
If you plan to submit a Storyline, please send me an email at bigskydevelopment@hotmail.com with “Storyline Submission” in the subject line and tell me your name, contact info, and how many you plan to submit by 1 Oct.

Your postcard creation can be anything meaningful to you from the secret dream that someone will leave a box of chocolate on your doorstep to a more global hope for world peace.
The most important aspect of this Postcard Project is that the Hopes and Dreams you share are personal but secret.

Discussion:
· As part of show and tell, those folks participating in the art journal project displayed their interpretations.
· A particularly amazing self-portrait was quilted onto fusible fleece and then backed with felt for a clean finish. We all encouraged the artist to submit her work into whatever show is most appropriate as soon as possible.
We really had some wonderful work presented, in all types of mediums, including an art assemblage.
· An artist brought in a purse she made from the rusted fabric we made last meeting. Beautiful work! She also discussed the various products she used to get the heavily textured look with the fabric insert. She used “Krinkle Magic” (Jenny Haskins, very slippery). She also discussed the uses of and provided samples of Pellon Fabric Magic (cheapest) and Texture Magic which shrinks 30% with heat from steam on iron. She also discussed using Rayon Challis (which she got for $3.yd from “Fabric Supplier” on Etsy which starts at 54” wide and shrinks to 48”. She also recommended Dritz wash away wonder tape for zippers because you don’t have to use pins. She used it on the purse and the zipper went in like a dream. Both the zipper on top and for the concealed carry pocket!
· An artist showcased her papel picado art she made during a workshop at the McNay, open to members. https://www.mcnayart.org/
· An artist brought in prayer flags she made based on an earlier SPUTNIK presentation.
· An artist brought in a cute carnation puppy made from silk flowers. So sweet!
Presentation:
We had a wonderful conversation about stuff; how to manage it, what to do with it, how to set it free. We provided a supportive, welcoming environment for those folks really struggling with managing their stuff.
One artist showed how to fold fabric using a 6.5” Quilter’s Ruler and discussed how organizing with this tip changed her life (and didn’t require buying any supporting products for organizing).
One artist discussed folding fabric using comic board inserts as a backboard.
We discussed the pros and cons of storing in plastic bins or Ziploc bags.
SparepARTS http://sparepartssa.org/ is a great way to set your stuff free knowing it will go to an artistic home.
Austin Creative Reuse http://austincreativereuse.
One member shared her less than positive experience with her estate sale. She still has lots of stuff left over at 303 Squires Road and anyone interested in buying can contact Sandra Lands at 210-544-2828 for access. Groups are preferred so get with a bunch of friends and go visit.
We had a long discussion about the guilt associated with our stuff and the feeling we “should” get money back for it. At some point, it’s worth more in saved storage fees and mental relief to either donate it to one of the organizations above or to a thrift store. Even if you donate to a regular old thrift store, artists shop there as well and you are helping both the thrift store charity and the artists.
Set your stuff free back out into the world and release the weight from your mind and spirit.
