The 8 January 2017 FASA Spirited, Passionate, Uninhibited, Thoughtful, Nurturing, Innovative, Kind (SPUTNIK) meeting adjourned at 2 pm, with a vibrant group of artists in attendance. We were all excited about presenting our Artistic Resolutions. One artist brought a laminator, in case anyone wanted to laminate their Artistic Resolutions. One artist brought a selection of “Round To Its” to allow everyone to get a round to it, if they wanted one.

- The Magic Valley Arts Council’s art contest, Art & Soul of the Magic Valley, is in need of fiber artists to continue the conversation of ‘what is art?’ and “why art is important.”Now in its 7th year, Art & Soul of the Magic Valley is the largest cash-awarding art contest in the Northwest, held in rural Twin Falls, ID. Determined by public vote, Grand Prize is awarded $15,000 and a total of $43,000 will be awarded to 30 winners. A prize of $1,000 is awarded to the Best of Show in fourteen categories. Here is where I need your help… We have struggled to have people entry the Fiber Category and are at risk of having this category no longer be a part of the contest. I am hoping you would be willing to enter Art & Soul of the Magic Valley (entry fee is $50) or pass this information along to some of your friends. We believe fiber arts are necessary to the overall conversation of valuing art. Show prospectus and entry application is at www.MagicValleyHasArt.com .Artists entered in the contest are allowed to sell their work. Twin Falls is located 80 miles south of Sun Valley, ID. We have many collectors that shop for new art during the contest.
- ClothPaperScissors has a challenge out right now to submit animal themed tote bags. The group discussed various types and flavors of submissions.
- Say Si has “Small Scale for a Larger Cause” request for entries out. Artwork is accepted in any medium, we only ask that in keeping with the theme of the show that you submit work in a “small-scale” (smaller than 11″ x 17″) ready-to-exhibit format.

Presentation:
The group was very excited about presenting their Artistic Resolutions and we even “helped” some artists by encouraging them to add a deadline to their goal. We talked about focusing on the positive piece of the resolution, instead of making yourself negative resolutions. For example, “I won’t buy any new fabric until I’ve used up the fabric I already have” became, “I will create 3 pieces using my current stash before I buy more stash.” Besides, how many of us have done the “I won’t buy more fabric” thing and then not stuck to it anyway while also feeling guilty. That’s just negativity without creativity. We will continue to bring our Artistic Resolutions to the meeting and provide updates on our accomplishments through the year.
We talked about the difference between a UFO (Unfinished Object), a WIP (work in progress), and learned a new one IMM (in my mind, as in, I’m thinking about making…).
One artist brought out an art journal she used with her students to keep them working every month on a new perspective. This sparked a later discussion about doing something similar at SPUTNIK. We will discuss (and probably kick off) an art journal group with a leader providing a monthly prompt. The group will then bring their journals to the meeting and discuss what they produced and what they learned from it.
One artist used her artistic resolution to provide March’s presentation of prayer flags. Here’s a great website for fabric focused prayer flags. http://theprayerflagproject.blogspot.com/p/project-overview.html
Future:
February’s presentation will be Scandinavian Hearts. Everyone is encouraged to bring fabric or paper in sizes of roughly a page of paper (8.5 x 11”). We will enjoy the presentation and then folks can make some hearts of their own (we will have interfacing at the meeting to help with the fabric hearts).
Presentation Schedule:
These will be about 10-15 minutes unless otherwise noted. Volunteers to present your passion are welcome.
