SPUTNIK Meeting Minutes
AUGUST meeting will be Sunday the 11th at 2 pm at Jean Dahlgren’s studio at 240 East Huisache, SATX 78212.
The 14 July FASA Spirited, Passionate, Uninhibited, Thoughtful, Nurturing, Innovative, Kind (SPUTNIK) meeting was attended by a sweaty (or is that schwety?) but enthusiastic group of artists, ready to support each other!
Calls for Entry:

The first event was AWESOME!!!
· Criteria for ATC
· A Member’s only event
· 2 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches
· Monthly Theme – August’s theme is “Summa Tyme!”
· Medium – artist choice
· Be prepared to create at least 10 cards for trading – this was a good number for the SPUTNIK traders
· Creator’s name on the back
· Number the cards.
· They do not have to be identical
· Trading will take place at SPUTNIK meetings and after each general FASA meeting

45th Annual Juried FASA Exhibition
October 11, 2019 through November 15, 2019
Online Entry Opens: Monday, July 1, 2019
“Threads of Magic”, an exhibition at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Kelso Art Center.
Juror: Sue Benner. An innovator in her field, Benner creates complex dyed and painted textiles combined with recycled fabric to form collaged fields of pattern, color, and beauty. See her website for additional details www.suebenner.com .
Eligibility: Show is open to both current members of the Fiber Artists of San Antonio (FASA) and non-members. Each individual may enter three (3) pieces of art for this show. FASA member entry fee of $30 for up to three pieces. Non-member entry fee will be $35 for up to three pieces. Artwork must be original and completed after January 1, 2017, and not have been part of a previous Fiber Artists of San Antonio Exhibition. Each piece must be primarily of textile or fiber, but may incorporate other materials. Exhibition is open to wall and ceiling suspended, as well as 3D work. Hanging artwork is not to exceed 60 inches in height or width. All hanging/display apparatus must be included with artwork.

Artwork must be created since January 1, 2017
No entry fee
Artwork needs to be primarily textile, fiber or mixed media creations
Format: size 8”x10” (vertical format)
Artwork and embellishment will be contained within the piece
Leave 1/2” at each of the 4 corners free of beads or heavy embellishment
A grommet will be attached at each corner for consistency in display. You are not responsible to add the grommets which will be attached after the artwork is submitted.

A SENSE OF PLACE: TEXAS LANDSCAPE ART QUILTS
Deadline: May 31, 2020
Exhibition Concept:
From above or below, from far or near, abstracted or hyper-photographic, Texas geography, geology, and land forms inspire artists with the diversity, grandeur, mystery, and complexity that unrolls from the Gulf to the Staked Plains to the Borderlands and the Hill Country.
Artists are invited to explore their emotional connections with landscape themes, and to push the boundaries of what constitutes landscape art. Literal and non-literal gestures in the work will be considered.

· INTERNATIONAL FIBER ARTS IX EXHIBITION – August 2 – September 8, 2019 Sebastopol Center for the Arts
o International Fiber Arts IX is a juried exhibition presenting a distinct approach to innovative and traditional fiber techniques, and a contemporary concept for the use of traditional and unusual materials. Now in its 13th year, Style is a show, sale and benefit celebrating independent contemporary craft and design. · When you’ve collected a bunch of beautiful papers, you can bind them together using “padding compound.” It glues the edges together to make a paper pad. Who knew? Not me! https://www.mybinding.com/finishing-equipment/padding-compound.html
· If you happen to be going through Indiana, an artist recommends stopping at Shipshewana. It’s an old Amish town with wonderful fabric and quilt stores. The artist was horrified her family only allowed an hour for a fabric store as big as a stadium! https://www.shipshewana.com/
Discussion:
· An artist discovered working on ATCs promoted further artistic efforts and jump started a stalled project. Little bits at a time make a difference!
· Some thoughts on creativity from Robin Atkins
o YOU are an artist, quit denigrating your creativity and sense of accomplishment. St. Francis of Assisi said something like: “He who works with his hands is a laborer; he who works with his hands and his mind is a craftsman; he who works with his hands and his mind and his heart is an artist.”
o Each of us is an artist inside. Artistry is learned – mostly by practice, by doing it one piece at a time, not judging what we do, and moving quickly onto the next piece. We get in touch with our artistry when we let go of our fear of failure and let our hearts speak out boldly, saying “This is what I like; I do it because I like it!”
o Also, doing our art with a small group of like-minded friends is important, because we support each other as artists.
o And finally, we must appreciate just how valuable our creativity is to ourselves, our families, and ultimately the world. We don’t short-change it; we take time to nurture it regularly. We go to museums, take workshops, buy books, pay for supplies – whatever it takes to keep practicing our art and breaking down the walls.

· An artist brought in a blinged out rock. The teacher had provided a pattern but our artist decided to go down their own path. It was beautiful!
· An artist brought in business cards made from the marbled fabric presentation and other fabric scraps. A beautiful distinction!
· An artist brought in lots and lots and lots of indigo dye results from our last dye day. She’s bringing them back for the next dye day to re-dip them for a darker color.
· Susan Blades is asking for help finding “odd figures” no larger than about 4-6 inches. She brought in a small plastic Pee-Wee Herman doll as an example.
· An artist brought in a cyanotype print of a stamp enlarged from a picture taken from Annie Centeno’s ephemera collection showcased at the last presentation. Amazing technique and creativity.
· Pat Schulz is selling her old Viking sewing machine. Contact her if you are interested.
Presentation:
Sandy and Cindi brought in their recycled art and led us in a fun make and take. We all enjoyed the opportunity to get paint-y and creative.
Can’t wait to see them again next month with Altered Altoid Tins!
